However, as is the tradition of their Chapter, only the Grand Masters are aware[1a] of the Stormwatchers' true history with the Voidrippers. This pertains to the fact, that the Warband were originally Stormwatcher Space Marines who began worshiping Khorne and then began converting or killing their Battle Brothers, who refused to do so as well. When they had finished hunting the loyalists down, the corrupted Stormwatchers became the Voidrippers and vanished into the Warp. The Warband was unaware, however, that a few survived loyalist Stormwatchers survived their purge and over the next millennia, they were able to rebuild the Chapter with the aid of the Inquisitors of the Caligari Conclave. The Stormwatchers and Conclave also worked together to keep the existence of the Chapter a secret and to hide the Voidrippers' connection to it[1e]. In time, only the Chapter's Grand Masters would know the truth[1a]. However, the Conclave made the mistake of keeping such knowledge available only to its high ranking members[1e]. This proved disastrous in M42, when a low-ranking Caligari Conclave Inquisitor entered the forbidden Gwaelod System[1b], despite being warned against doing so by the head of the Conclave[1a]. There he discovered a seemingly abandoned Stormwatcher Starfort[1b], which was actually the Voidrippers' Blood Fort and it served as their only base of operation in Realspace. The Inquisitor then began activating it, alongside his Stormwatcher retinue member, Sergeant Caius Thorn[1c], but this awakened the Voidrippers who were left slumbering there. The two were quickly attacked by the Warband's forces on the Starfort[1c], but the Inquisitor and Thorn were able to escape back to his ship. However the Voidrippers were now aware that the loyalist Stormwatchers still lived[1d] and this led the Warband to begin a Crusade to destroy the Chapter once and for all.[1e]
The Voidrippers soon discovered that Ascalon served as the Stormwatcher's Homeworld and launched a full scale invasion[1e]. Magnusson would lead his Chapter in defending the world, but their duties to the Caligari Conclave, meant that most of the Stormwatchers were on covert missions across the Caligari Sector. Because of this, the Voidrippers began to overwhelm Ascalon[1f], despite its population not knowing that the Stormwatchers were on their world. The Chapter's Grand Masters had thought this ignorance would keep Ascalon safe, but the invasion made Magnusson realize how wrong they were[1h]. As the world suffered at the Voidrippers hands', several Astra Militarum Regiments were called in from nearby worlds to aid Ascalon, until the off-world Stormwatchers could return[1g]. However before that occurred, the tide turned against the Voidrippers when the contrite Inquisitor who had entered Fort Blood, and brought about the invasion, arrived with the Freeblade Ambrose Caradoc. Their strength[1i], allowed the Stormwatchers to attack the Ascalon fort where the Voidrippers had opened a Warp Rift. It had allowed the Warband to launch their sudden invasion and so became the main the target that the Stormwatchers needed to destroy. However Magnusson knew the Chaos Lord who led the Voidrippers would be there and ordered his Chapter to purge other areas of the fort instead. This was to prevent the Heretic from revealing the truth of the Voidrippers' origin, to any Stormwatcher that encountered the Chaos Lord. Instead, Magnusson was joined by the Inquisitor, who had already learned the truth aboard Fort Blood. Together the two raced towards the Warp Rift, which was defended by the Chaos Lord Kairn Golgarth and his ally the Herald of Khorne known as the Gore-Drenched One. In the fierce battle that followed, however, the Grand master and Inquisitor were victorious. With their foes defeated, the two were then able to close the Warp Rift and this prevented the Voidrippers from sending more of their forces to Ascalon. With that, the Stormwatcher now needed only to deal with the Warband's forces that were still on their Homeworld.[1j]
