Lazulai is an affluent Imperial Mining World, that is being consumed by the Tyranids.[1]

History

The world's wealth comes from the precious stones beneath Lazulai's surface, which were coveted by the Adeptus Ministorum. It was the most powerful Imperial presence there and used the stones to manufacture the majority of the gem-encrusted shrines, altars and devotional relic cases within Lazulai's Sector. The wealth generated from the stones also allowed several great cities and fortresses to be built upon the world's surface. Lazulai's population would greatly benefit from all of this, and its people became indolent and ignorant of the war-torn galaxy. However this allowed their society to be easily infected by a Genestealer Cult, which ultimately drew the Tyranids to Lazulai.[1]

Due to its importance and being a gateway to the Lazulai System, though, the Imperium fought to defend the world. This led to several Astra Militarum Regiments and Aeronautica Imperialis fighter-craft to be deployed against the Xenos. However this was not enough to defeat the Tyranids and Lazulai was overwhelmed and began to be consumed. As a result of this, the world was declared to be lost and no further reinforcements were sent there. The surviving Imperial forces meanwhile, continued to fight the Tyranids from the world's surviving fortresses. While it was doomed, though, Lazulai still had an asset that was sought after by the Imperium. This Archeotech needed to be evacuated before the world was consumed by the Tyranids and the mission was given by Sector Command to General Kvelter, who commanded the Cobalt Fortress. However each force she sent out, was quickly destroyed by the Tyranids. Now with only a final chance to retrieve the Archeotech left to her, the General has charged the Catachan CMIII Major Wulf Khan, with completing the mission.[1]
