The Sanguinary Brotherhood (sometimes called Sons of Sanguinius or Chapters of the Blood) are the Space Marine Chapters that are descended from the Blood Angels and their Primarch Sanguinius.[1]

Conclaves

The successor chapters of the Blood Angles keep a firmly united counsel and convene in conclaves during matters of grave import from time to time. In such conclaves, it is typical that all present defer to the Commander of the Blood Angels, although over the course of the 10,000 years since the end of the Horus Heresy, there have been occasions when the voice of another is considered senior. One such case was when the newly-appointed Commander Kalael succumbed to the Black Rage in M35 and it was decided that the Chapter Masters from the Angels Sanguine and the Angels Vermillion would jointly take up the mantle of seniority, in order for the Chapters to show a united front against the various threats imperiling the Imperium at that time. Under their leadership, the Sons of Sanguinius faced Waaagh! Vangrod, the Chaos incursion of Silas Gorehand and the latter phase of the Nova Terra Interregnum.[2]

When Hive Fleet Leviathan threatened to engulf the Blood Angels' homeworld of Baal, Commander Dante summoned all the Chapters of the Blood to defend their ancestral home.[3a] Nearly all answered his call, but the cost was high; by the end of the Devastation of Baal, eight Chapters were wiped out and six more were reduced to a handful of men.[3b]

While the majority of the Sanguinary Brotherhood are strongly bound to the Blood Angels, there are those who have less regard for its ancestral traditions or for their brother Successor Chapters. Some prefer to operate in isolation from the Brotherhood instead, for various reasons. This includes being humiliated by how strongly the flaws of the Blood Angels' Gene-seed have gripped their ranks or because they are determined to resolve its curses in their own way. Others have had their traditions diverge from the Brotherhood, after being kept apart from it for millennia by war, while some have chosen to fully dedicate themselves to their own duties above everything else.[4a] The Angels Vermillion and Atlantian Spears are among the Blood Angels' Successor Chapters who have isolated themselves from the Sanguinary Brotherhood.[4b]
