XCV-78 is an Imperial Mining World.[1]
History
It was in a primeval state, when XCV-78 was discovered by the Imperium at the end of M39 and began to be surveyed. When this was completed by Adeptus Mechanicus Explorators, they noted that there was rich mineral wealth beneath the world's crust and deep mines were constructed to extract it. However as the work to do so progressed, the mines began to suffer an increasing number of setbacks. These included the disappearance of entire work teams, which were composed of hundreds of miners, and also the collapse of mine heads. This led to widespread panic spreading amongst XCV-78's population and three Astra Militarum Regiments were created to calm and police the miners. The Regiments succeeded in doing so and the miners began their work once again. Their search for more of XCV-78's resources, though, had them burrow deeper and deeper into the world's crust...[1]
Sometime afterwards, the Asuryani struck XCV-78 without warning and destroyed the Space Station that had been orbiting the Mining World. The station's debris then rained down on its capital, as the Xenos invaded XCV-78 and their Ghostships bombarded the world's mines from space. The Asuryani's lightning attacks took a toll on the Astra Militarum Regiments defending XCV-78, but their surviving Guardsmen were able to muster a defense around the Diablos mining province. There the Imperials still defending XCV-78, made their last desperate stand to save it from certain destruction at the hands of the invading Xenos. However it is not known what ultimately became of the world.[1]
