Magog was a Chaos Fortress World in the Magog System, one of the Charon Stars near the Hadex Anomaly in the Jericho Reach, Ultima Segmentum. It was originally an Imperial Agri World until it came under the influence of the Hadex Anomaly. Despite being overrun by daemons, it continued to produce vast amounts of food as well as troops, and was considered a vital asset to the Chaos forces during the Achilus Crusade. As a result the planet was heavily defended, including possibly by a Blackstone Fortress.[1a][2]

History

Before the Hadex Anomaly manifested, Magog was the only inhabitable planet in the binary pulsar Magog System, filled with citizens loyal to The Emperor and the Imperial Creed. It was a stable Agri World, with indigenous life, abundant crops, and rivers full of water.[1a]

When the Hadex Anomaly appeared in 656.M40,[1b] it expanded and contracted, drawing in and ejecting Magog countless times over millennia. This had a substantial effect on the planet, which was tainted by the Warp. The surface ebbed and flowed, as if the planet was breathing, while landmasses, including mountain ranges, began to migrate on a whim, and were often subsumed beneath the surface, reappearing in a different place days or decades later. Its rivers no longer flowed with water, but blood.[1a]

Despite its environment and all indigenous life being affected by the Warp, for unknown reasons the planet consistently remained able to support life and abundant agriculture. Many of the planet's plants became carnivorous, including some that were harvested for food, which were fed on those who tended them. The crops were mutated and hideously deformed, but extremely bountiful, providing far greater yields than many of the best Imperial Agri Worlds. Its fields were tilled and harvested constantly by countless slaves. Daemons from the Warp were rife on the planet, breeding mutants and driving the surviving tainted humans to pay obeisance by committing acts of debauchery, cruelty, and wanton destruction in their service.[1a]

By the time of the Achilus Crusade, the planet had become a Chaos Fortress World, with substantial orbital emplacements around the planet and extensive defences in the Magog System, to protect the food supply it provided and also its bountiful manpower, both of which made the planet a crucial asset for the forces of Chaos.[1a] When the warlords of Khazant fled to the Charon Stars in 782.M41 they formed the Chaos cult The Stigmartus,[1c] which used Magog as a breeding ground and training centre, actively recruiting from the planet.[1a] As one of their recruiting worlds it was cut off from the proper stream of real space, making time pass much faster there, allowing the cult to rapidly replenish their troops.[3a] The planet's daemons also provided a seemingly endless supply of soldiers, and the Chaos Space Marines that were active in the Magog System may have recruited from Magog as well.[1a]

Despite being beyond the Cellebos Warzone of the Acheros Salient, it was a high priority target for Imperial forces of the Achilus Crusade due to its many uses, but was considered virtually impenetrable without drawing the forces of Chaos away from the system, or substantially more resources and manpower being given to the Acheros Salient.[1a]

Possible Blackstone Fortress

Tentative Imperial reports during the Achilus Crusade identified one of Magog's orbital emplacements as a Blackstone Fortress.[1a]

Commodore Stefan Hemelschot, the commander of the Imperial Navy flotilla of the Acheros Salient, was obsessed with the possibility of a Blackstone Fortress being in orbit around Magog.[3b]
