Tormentor (Emperor's Children)
Tormentors are a type of rank-and-file soldier seen in the warbands of the Emperor's Children.[1]
Description
Tormentors echo the Tactical Squads of the original loyalist Emperor's Children Legion. Clad in corrupted armour and armed with highly ornamented Bolters, Tormentors are distinct from their Infractor cousins in that they specialize in ranged combat. Tormentors see themselves as embodying the noble ideal of true Space Marines - that of one free from the stagnant dogma of the loyalists - but in truth they are little more than self-serving and egomaniacal reavers.[2a]
Known for their inflated sense of self-worth and ability, they only view strategies or battleplans as elegant when revolving around them. Squads of Tormentors sometime assign themselves special missions amid combat, inventing tactical objectives to showcase their skills according to their own twisted whims and logic. Sometimes, they are even retroactively applied in order to justify their latest excesses. Whatever self-indulgence they are guilty of, however, is tolerated by their lords thanks to their ability to serve as devastating shock troops. They are given free reign to aggressively take ground from the enemy and move on swiftly. They abhor the concept of holding ground, seeing it as a dull waste of time when more sensation can be attained somewhere else.[2a]
Tormentors have a fetishistic relationship with their Bolters, seeing their mastery in the ancient weapon as an artform in which they have perfected. Many Tormentors demand the entirety of their armour's auto-senses be intertwined with their Bolters, while others have their warband's artificers fit them with arcane haptic triggers or mutated interfaces of nerve-rich tendrils. However some Tormentors secure more potent ranged weapons with which to illustrate their skill, such as Plasma Guns or Meltaguns.[2a]
Squad leaders of Tormentors are known as Obsessionists, and are armed with a Power Sword or Rapture Lash and a Plasma Pistol.[2b]
