Indomitus Crusade Fleet Secundus was one of the Battlefleets assembled for the Imperium's Indomitus Crusade and was charged with fighting its way towards the Eye of Terror in a campaign dubbed the Road of Martyrs.[1]
History
Fleet Secundus was given the daunting task of securing the route between Terra and the shattered Cadian Gate, which the High Lords of Terra expected to be the site of a concentrated counterattack by the forces of Abaddon. However, no such massive attack towards the Throneworld came, the reason of which still unsettles Imperial strategists to this day. The fleet was launched early, with a large part of its force assembled in the Sol System itself. Their main route of advance was through the Warp Route at Vorlese.[7]
Unlike the other Crusade Fleets which were dispersed across wide swathes of the Galaxy, Secundus was dispatched towards a relatively small region in full force. Upon leaving Vorlese they turned north, not heading solely towards the Eye of Terror but also pushing against multiple threats in a broad fan. Battle Group Betaris was charged with securing Armageddon. While the fleet gathered reinforcements along the way, they often found themselves fighting hellish foes and Warp abominations. Faced with these horrors, many of its members forged a hyper-religious zeal and fanaticism not found in the other fleets.[7] This fanaticism was fueled by heavy Ecclesiarchy presence within the fleet in the form of substantial Sisters of Battle forces.[4]
Due to the sheer amount of Chaos and Ork forces in northern Segmentum Solar and Segmentum Obscurus and with the Officio Logisticarum experiencing much difficulty in resupply, Fleet Secundus soon began to be worn down under attrition. Their large losses gave the route of Secundus the grim nickname of the Road of Martyrs. But despite the horrendous losses, progress was made in part because of close coordination with Fleet Primus.[7]
Following the discovery of the Nachmund Gauntlet, the role of Fleet Secundus increased dramatically and it became involved in the formation of the Sanctus Wall and the Anaxian Line closer to the Eye of Terror. The fleet never demobilized despite achieving most of its objectives, but the Imperium is largely content with the stalemate that has set in in the Cadian Gate region.[7]
