006.M31, Deliverance. For the seventh night in a row, Praefector Marcus Valerius is jolted awake by a dream of fire and blood, which he is convinced means he must go and assist the Raven Guard at Isstvan V.[1a] He shares his concerns with Commander Branne, who has also remained on Deliverance to guard the Legion's keep, but the Astartes refuses to leave his post, rebuking him for such superstition.[1b]
Isstvan V. Corvus Corax emerges from a downed Thunderhawk and receives news of the XIX's staggering losses.[1c] Some days later, he leads a multi-stage ambush against a column of Iron Warriors[1d], where he delights in punishing those he sees as tyrants[1e]. Resorting to drastic measures, the Raven Guard loot the dead and initiate a campaign of hit-and-run actions to ensure their own survival.[1f]
Deliverance. Valerius has endured the nightmare for thirty nights and decided to take action, mustering his Auxilia forces despite his subordinates' doubts.[1g] He once again faces Branne, who begins questioning the praefector's loyalty.[1h]
Isstvan V. Corax sets out alone[1i], sneaking through the planet to find traces of his loyalist brothers, but comes to the conclusion that the XIX will have to fight alone.[1j]
Deliverance. As Valerius's ships are being targeted by the local orbital batteries, he pleads one last time with Branne. In desperation, he offers to be personally held at gunpoint throughout the operation and declares himself ready to carry all the blame and shame should it prove a mistake.[1k]
Isstvan V, day 98 of the Drop Site Massacre. The remaining Raven Guard prepare to face the wrath of the World Eaters[1l] but, as the last stand begins, Valerius's ships arrive and evacuate the loyalists.[1m]
